Early Life and Education
Agus Kurniawan was born in Ketapang, West Kalimantan, on
August 24, 1984. Raised in a religious household, he attended several schools
in Ketapang, including SDN 1 Sandai and SDN 7 Ketapang. He pursued further
Islamic education at MTSN 1 Ketapang and MAN 1 Ketapang. In 2002, Agus briefly
studied at STAIN Pontianak (now IAIN Pontianak), but he returned to Ketapang to
complete his studies at STAI Al-Haudl, graduating in 2009 with a degree in
Islamic Social Sciences. Later, he earned a Master's degree in Communication
from Paramadina University.
Writing Career
Agus Kurniawan's passion for writing began in his youth,
where he contributed to his high school's student magazine as an editor. He
further developed his writing skills in college, where he became the chief
editor of the student press at STAI Al-Haudl. His work ranges from fiction to
motivational writing, history, and Islamic spirituality. He published several
books, including Let's Grow (2011), Lama Tak Menyebut NamaMu (short story
collection), Kedang, Musim Berpindah, Ember Bocor (an ebook), and his most
recent works Novel Kusuma and Sang Raje Kenyaye. Additionally, his unfinished
work Kampung Tanpa Baliho holds a special place in his heart.
Agus' writings often focus on the rich history of Ketapang
and West Kalimantan, highlighting his desire to promote the region’s culture
and historical significance to a broader audience.
Professional Life
Before becoming a recognized writer, Agus Kurniawan worked
various jobs, including as a shopkeeper, English teacher at local schools such
as SDN 18 Sukabangun and MAN Ketapang, and a typist in Sandai. He also served
as a scout leader and an Islamic preacher, working as a religious counselor in
the Ketapang Religious Affairs Office (KUA) since 2011.
Personal Life
Agus is married to Dewi, who plays an integral role in his
writing and publishing endeavors as an editor and director of Forpeka
Publishing. Together, they have two children.
Writing Contributions
Agus Kurniawan is an advocate for promoting creativity and
the literary arts in Ketapang. He is the founder and inspirator of the Nashiha
Council and has been involved in multiple literary projects, including
contributing to the collections Orang-Orang di Batas Garis (2010) and Jangak
(2012). His work is deeply influenced by his favorite authors, Rabindranath
Tagore and Martin Lings.
